„COALITION FOR THE BENEFIT OF PEDESTRIANS”

On the 23 of November 2011, at the Motor Transport Institute, took place working meeting inaugurating Association - „COALITION FOR THE BENEFIT OF PEDESTRIANS ". It is a first, this type of association, which in a comprehensive way, will take care of the interest of the least protected road traffic participants.

The dangers to pedestrians on the roads in Poland are decidedly higher than in other EU countries. In 2010 there were 11 286 accidents involving pedestrians (29% of all), in which 1 245 people died (31,9% of all), and 10826 were injured (22,1% of all). Pedestrians, despite the fact of being a particular risk group, do not have any representation of their interests, as rightful road traffic participants. While designing, building, modernising and maintaining roads, the prime concern is given to the needs and safety of the mechanical vehicles' drivers and the problem of the pedestrians' safety is marginalised. As it turns out, very often the cause of the accidents is a lack of the pedestrians' awareness for the dangers posed by the road traffic

Our duty is to alter the status quo, and this is why the Motor Transport Institute and the Association to Help the Harmed in the Accidents and Road Collisions - „Alter Ego" on the 23 of November 2011 have inaugurated with the letter of intent, establishing of the Association - „COALITION FOR THE BENEFIT OF PEDESTRIANS ".

As statutory activities the „COALITION FOR THE BENEFIT OF PEDESTRIANS" envisages intensification of the actions to benefit the pedestrian, by:

  • supporting and possible preparation of the legislative  changes improving the position of pedestrians, as rightful rightful road traffic participants,
  • actions to create pedestrians-friendly and increasing their safety, road infrastructure solutions,
  • preparing own projects increasing pedestrians safety,
  • organising data base and conducting analyses involving pedestrians,
  • actions promoting behaviours increasing pedestrians' safety (conferences, trainings, campaigns, events, promoting retro reflective elements, etc.),
  • entering co-operation with the institutions dealing with the road traffic safety problems,
  • entering co-operation with the organisations dealing with the pedestrians safety in other countries and utilising their experiences.
