Scientists from the University of Virginia visit ITS
Researchers from the University of Virginia visited the Motor Transport Institute (ITS) in Warsaw to exchange knowledge on road safety and new technologies. The delegation included Prof. Matthew Panzer, Vice Dean of Engineering and expert in injury biomechanics, and Dr. Bronisław Gepner, a Warsaw University of Technology graduate and professor at the Center for Applied Biomechanics. They presented the center’s work—one of the world’s leading academic labs in injury biomechanics—highlighting research on passenger and pedestrian safety, military injuries, sports biomechanics, and advanced computer modeling. The importance of these findings for U.S. road safety policies was also emphasized.
During the visit, the guests toured ITS’s Road Traffic Safety Centre and Transport Telematics Centre, and discussed Polish and American experiences in implementing telematics, monitoring driver behavior, and improving road safety. ITS showcased results from EU projects such as Baseline, ESRA, and Trendline, as well as research from its Autonomous and Connected Vehicle Competence Center (CK:PAP), including simulator-based studies on fatigue, driver training, and control handover. Projects like DARTS and IMPROVA were also presented, focusing on autonomous vehicle testing and long-term consequences of traffic accidents. The meeting underscored the value of interdisciplinary and international collaboration in developing effective safety solutions.
